In the jubilee-exhibition "What is sculpture? 100 years - 100 heads; The century of modern sculpture" this group of works from September 10th on will be presented in the north-hall of the museum at an important place in the new presentation of the museum collection of Stiftung Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum. Jean Tinguely (1925-1991)Jean Tinguely (1925-1991) was a Swiss painter and sculptor. He is best known for his sculptural machines or kinetic art, in the Dada tradition; known officially as metamechanics. Tinguely was born in Freiburg, Switzerland.Jean Tinguely studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basle from 1941 to 1945, a period during which he discovered the art of Schwitters and Klee as well as becoming an enthusiastic fan of the Bauhaus. He began experimenting with movement in space in 1944 with his machine-like sculptures by equipping them with electric motors and making them spin around at high speed. Tinguely never ceased working, even in his old age. The last large retrospective exhibition before the death of Jean Ringuely took place at the Centre George Pompidou in Paris in 1988.
