Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978)

Italian painter

The Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) was born in July 1888 in Volos, Greece. Following a classical-humanist education De Chirico attended painting classes at the Polytechnic in Athens. He studied at the art academy in Munich from 1906 to 1909.

Pittura Metafisica

In 1909 Giorgio de Chirico moved to Italy. He visited Milan, Turin and Florence. In Paris, France, he befriended with Guillaume Apollinaire and Pablo Picasso. Giorgio de Chirico participated in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne.
In 1917 Giorgio de Chirico met Carlo Carra. Together they founded Pittura Metafisica. He spent some years in the 20s and 30s in Paris, but otherwise lived in Milan, Florence and Rome.

Poetic quality

His stress on the poetic qualities of objects was a resource for both dada and surrealism.
Giorgio de Chirico died on 20 November 1978 in Rome.
