UN Studio UNFOLD

An hour by train north of Rotterdam, Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos preside over the 45-person UN Studio they founded in 1998. To the tune of one partner's proclamation that "the box is dead," they have spent the intervening years conducting a network of researchers and specialists in architecture, urban development, and infrastructure, whose goal it is to create perceptive projects which seamlessly weld together brief, construction, infrastructure, circulation, form, and space. Their Erasmus Bridge, a sinuous arc of roadway suspended from a single soaring pylon, à la Star Wars, has become the icon of a new Rotterdam.

Verb: Architecture Boogazine

Verb: a new publication devoted to cutting edge issues in architecture and design. The first issue of "Verb" looks closely at the current relationship between information and authorship in cultural practice, asking: how does the increasing complicity between author and audience affect architectural practice? The shift from ''modern'' to digital systems of design and production opens up a material work to a much more profound interaction between author and audience.

Villa Mairea

Villa Mairea is one of the finest houses of the twentieth century. For those familiar with it only from a few images, this book is a revelation. Alvar Aalto used his knowledge of vernacular building, Classicism and Modernism to create a building that is humane, rich and lyrical. Richard Weston is head of the University of Portsmouth School of Architecture and writes for the Architectural Review and the Architect’s Journal.
