| Parallax by Steven HollMost celebrated architect
What makes Steven Holl one of the most celebrated architects working today? As we learn in Parallax, his success comes from his sculptural form making, his interest in the poetics of space, color, and materiality, and his fascination with scientific phenomena.Working methodsSteven Holl reveals his working methods in this, his biggest and most ambitious book yet on his work-part treatise, part manifesto, and part, as Steven Holl writes, "liner notes" to fifteen recent projects, some never before published.Parallax traces Steven Holl's ideasParallax traces Steven Holl's ideas on topics as diverse as the "chemistry of matter" and the "pressure of light," and shows how they emerge in his architectural work: "strange attractors" at Cranbrook, "porosity" in his new dormitory at MIT, "tripleness" in the new Bellevue Art Museum in Washington. The result is a book that provides a personal tour of the work of one of the world's most esteemed architects.Designed by Michael RockParallax is designed by Michael Rock of the award-winning design firm 2x4. It is our fourth book on Steven Holl's work, following Anchoring, Intertwining, and The Chapel of St. Ignatius.Steven Holl designs understated buildingsBorn in 1947 in Washington State and raised in the cloudy Pacific Northwest, Steven Holl designs understated buildings that traffic in beauty and illumination. Steven Holl's first structure was a 400-square foot sculpture studio and pool house built in 1980 in New York.Since then, he has gone on to design dozens of award-winning buildings for university campuses and urban settings in the United States, Finland, and Japan, including a new wing for the School of Architecture at Pratt Institute in New York; Void Space/Hinged Space Housing in Fukuoka, Japan; Kiasma, the Helsinki contemporary art museum for which he received the Alvar Aalto Medal from the Finnish Association of Architects; and his famous Chapel of Saint Ignatius at Seattle University. Steven Holl currently lives and works in New York, where he is a professor of architecture at Columbia University. His most recent project is a major addition to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, scheduled for completion in 2004.
