Eiffel Tower The Eiffel Tower is a landmark and one of the world's premier tourist attractions in Paris. The tower is a technological masterpiece and was designed by Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923).

International exposition in Paris in 1889

To celebrate the centenary of the French Revolution an international exposition was held in Paris in 1889. A competition was held for designs for an appropriate monument. The contest was won by the bridge engineer Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel was a French engineer who founded his own company in 1866. He was one of the first engineers to use wrought-iron structures for bridges and buildings.

Statue of Liberty

Not many people know that Eiffel made the cast for the Statue of Liberty. This statue, designed by Bartholdi, was a French gift to commemorate the alliance between France and the United States during the American Revolution.
In the early 1890s Eiffel gave up the management of his company and dedicated his life to science. At Auteuil Eiffel built the first aerodynamic laboratory, which he donated to the state of France in 1921.

Highest structure in the world until 1930

The Eiffel Tower itself is 300 meters high. It was the highest structure in the world until 1930, when the Chrysler Building was completed in New York City.

Tourists attraction

Today the Eiffel Tower bears a broadcasting antennae and the construction serves as a tourists attraction. Stairs and elevators enable visitors to reach the top of the tower to enjoy a view over the city of Paris.
